The short version. You can use PianEd without an account at all — in guest mode nothing leaves your device. If you do create one, we store your email address, a display name and your lesson progress, and nothing else. We do not sell your data, we show no advertising, we use no advertising identifiers, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. You can delete everything from inside the app at any time.

1. Who we are
PianEd is a piano-learning app for Android, published on Google Play as
com.monalisa.pianed. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the
developer of PianEd. You can reach us at any time at
contact.pianed@gmail.com.
This policy covers the PianEd Android app and this website.
2. Using PianEd without an account
PianEd has a guest mode, and it is a real one. In guest mode no account is created, no email address is requested, and nothing about your practice is sent to our servers. Your lesson progress is written only to your own device, and it is removed when you uninstall the app.
The one exception is the Daily Key Rush leaderboard, which needs an account because a score has to belong to someone. You can play the daily challenge as a guest; your score simply is not submitted.
3. What we collect if you create an account
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address | To create your account, sign you in, and let you reset your password. |
| Display name | Shown on your profile and, if you play the Daily Key Rush, on that day's public leaderboard. You choose it and it does not have to be your real name. |
| Learner profiles | If your plan covers more than one learner, the name of each profile, so family members keep separate progress. |
| Lesson, song and workout progress | So your progress follows you if you change or reinstall your device. Stored as which items you have completed and how many stars you earned. |
| Daily challenge scores | Only if you play the Daily Key Rush while signed in. Your display name and score appear on that day's public leaderboard. |
| Subscription status | Whether a PianEd Pro entitlement is active, so the app knows what to unlock. Handled by RevenueCat and Google Play. |
That is the complete list. We do not build a profile of you, and we do not record what you tap, how long you looked at a screen, or where you were when you did it.
4. Signing in with Google
PianEd offers "Continue with Google" as an alternative to an email and password. If you use it:
- Google asks you to choose an account and shows you what will be shared before anything happens. If you close that sheet, nothing is shared and no account is created.
- Google gives us your email address, your
name as it appears on your Google account, and a
Google account identifier. We request the
emailandprofilescopes and nothing more. - We use the name to fill in your display name so you do not have to type it. You can change it afterwards.
- We never receive your Google password, and we have no access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts, calendar or any other Google service.
Google's own handling of the sign-in is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
5. Permissions and hardware on your device
MIDI keyboards
PianEd can receive notes from a physical MIDI keyboard connected by USB, and from a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard. This is entirely local. The notes you play are turned into sound and used to check the exercise in front of you, on your device, and then discarded. We do not record, store or transmit your playing, and we never send audio anywhere. PianEd does not use your microphone at all.
Bluetooth ("Nearby devices")
If you choose to look for a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard, Android 12 and later
require the app to ask for the Nearby devices permission
(BLUETOOTH_SCAN and BLUETOOTH_CONNECT). We use it
for exactly one thing: finding and connecting to a musical instrument.
PianEd does not derive your location from Bluetooth scanning and does not collect location data of any kind. The scan is used only to list nearby MIDI instruments so you can pick yours. If you never look for a Bluetooth keyboard, you will never be asked for this permission.
Storage and network
PianEd stores its lessons, songs and your progress in a private database on your device that no other app can read. Network access is used to sign in, sync progress, download premium content and submit a leaderboard score — nothing else.
6. The Daily Key Rush leaderboard
The Daily Key Rush is a sixty-second challenge, the same for every player in the world on a given day. If you play it while signed in, your display name and score are published on a public leaderboard that other players can see. Nothing else about you appears there — not your email address, not your country, not your progress.
If you would rather not appear on it, either play as a guest, or choose a display name that does not identify you. You can change your display name at any time in the app.
7. What we never collect
- We do not collect your location, and we do not ask for location permission.
- We do not access your contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
- We do not use advertising identifiers, and PianEd contains no advertising.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we run no third-party analytics or advertising software development kits inside the app.
- We do not record or upload your playing.
- We never see or store your payment card details. Payments are handled entirely by Google Play.
This website uses no cookies, no tracking pixels and no third-party analytics scripts. Visitor counts, if measured at all, are measured from our hosting provider's server logs, which do not identify you or follow you anywhere.
8. Who processes data for us
| Provider | What they handle |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Your account, learner profiles, progress and leaderboard scores. |
| RevenueCat | Subscription status and entitlements. |
| Google Play Billing | Payments, subscriptions, renewals and refunds. |
| Google Sign-In | Verifying who you are, if you choose that sign-in method. |
| Netlify | Hosting this website and the password-reset page. |
These are service providers acting on our instructions under contract. We do not sell your personal data to anyone, and we do not share it for advertising or for anyone else's purposes.
9. Where your data is stored
PianEd is available worldwide, and our providers operate data centres in several countries, including the United States. This means your data may be stored or processed outside the country you live in.
Where data belonging to people in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Switzerland is transferred elsewhere, our providers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent approved safeguard. If you would like the current detail for your region, email us and we will tell you.
10. Why we are allowed to use your data
If you are in the UK or the EEA, the UK GDPR and the GDPR require us to name a lawful basis for each use:
- Performance of a contract — creating your account, signing you in, syncing your progress, and unlocking what you have paid for. Without this data the app cannot do those things.
- Consent — publishing your display name and score on the public leaderboard, which only happens if you choose to play the daily challenge while signed in. You can withdraw it by not playing it, or by deleting your account.
- Legitimate interests — keeping the service secure and preventing fraudulent scores or purchases, balanced against your rights.
- Legal obligation — keeping records where tax or consumer law requires it.
11. How long we keep it
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, your profile, progress, leaderboard scores and entitlement records are removed from our systems, and your RevenueCat customer record is deleted too.
Purchase records held by Google Play are kept by Google under their own policies and retention rules, which we do not control and cannot delete.
12. Deleting your account
You can delete your account and all its data at any time, either from inside the app (Profile → Delete account) or by asking us. Full instructions are on the account deletion page.
Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription. If you subscribe to PianEd Pro, cancel it separately in the Google Play Store, or Google will continue to bill you. Cancel first, then delete.
13. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent you previously gave.
If you are in the UK or the EEA you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority. If you are in California, you have the right to know what is collected and to ask for deletion, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising either — and we note again that we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined there.
To exercise any of these, email contact.pianed@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. Most of them you can also do yourself, in the app, in less time than the email would take.
14. Children
PianEd is intended for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
A younger child can use PianEd in guest mode, where no account exists and no personal data is collected at all. If you are setting the app up for a child, we would suggest that, or a family profile with a display name that does not identify them — remember that the leaderboard is public.
15. Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with access restricted by database-level security rules, so one account cannot read another's data. Passwords are stored hashed, never in plain text, and are never visible to us. Account deletion runs on the server rather than in the app, and identifies you from your own session, so one user can never delete another's account.
No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information, and we keep the amount we hold small enough that a breach would expose very little.
16. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your data — for example if we ever introduced optional advertising — we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, not quietly afterwards.
